The bleachers were divided. Athletes in blue were on one side, ecstatically cheering for their fellow JIS Dragons. Athletes in red on the other, with equally ecstatic cheers for their own SAS Eagles. The parents and teachers from each school were also part of the school spirit. The atmosphere was tense as the kick-off started for the boys’ soccer match between JIS and SAS.
As the ball was passed among each member, the bleachers were shaking with excitement.. Not long after, with two minutes into the game, co-captain of JIS, Joey Pincus (#9), had already attempted a goal! Unfortunately, much to the dismay of the Dragons, Pincus was swiftly blocked by Liam Murgatroyd (#17) from the SAS team. Minutes later, a well aimed attempt at a goal was made by Gabriel Myong (#11) from SAS, however, the JIS goalie, Dimitri Voutyritsas (#1), readily deflected it with his legs.
Over the course of a few minutes, many great attempts at goals had been made by both Dragons and Eagles. At one point, Dimitri Voutyritsas, the goalkeeper of JIS, caught the ball outside of the box, resulting in a free kick for SAS. SAS took this opportunity to their advantage.. The JIS goalie wasn’t able to block the free kick and the Eagles were wild with glee!
Twenty-one minutes into the game, tensions were high among the supporters as Ryan Feenstra (#15) from JIS, managed to dribble the ball ahead to the SAS goal. With a powerful kick, the ball was launched into the net amid raucous cheers from the JIS Dragons. That put the game at a 1-1 for each team!
After half-time, every player gave their all and the bleachers were alive with cheering. Fifty-three minutes in, every player was quite exhausted, but that didn’t stop Ethan Thorpe (#12), a SAS player, from head-butting the ball, giving his teammates a clear shot into the goal. Ibrahim Eiweida (#9) took this opportunity to kick the ball into the goal! The Eagles’ cheers overpowered the field as they shouted in delight.
With both teams equally matched in intensity and speed, it was an incredibly tight match. Each player played extremely well and made their schools proud! However, SAS managed to win the game with two phenomenal goals. Good job, Eagles!
